About

My work is deeply connected to my passion for the mystical and the belief that in our digitally dominated age, shooting on film and allowing the camera and lens to be the only means of altering an image is an act of defiance, even subversion.

Drawing upon influences from magical realism, psychomagic and a purist’s refusal to retouch or embellish, I aim to explore the often-permeable boundaries between real and unreal, actual and imagined.  Using elements of long and multiple exposure, abnormal depth of field and explosive colors in combination with events and environments that question the method in which the artwork was made, the wizardry and magick captured in these images occurred in the physical plane and in front of the lens rather than via Photoshop or retouching. The accompanying graphic optical illusions, magnified to mural proportions, are hand painted.

Formally trained in traditional photography at University of North Texas, I’m passionate about the creation of slightly surreal, thought-provoking images free of any digital retouching. Shooting with film and letting the camera operate as a physical eye within the physical plane, the images like the portrait of singer/entertainer Ana Matronic and performance artist Johnny Blue Eyes are emblematic of my desire to defy expectations of what traditional photography can achieve.
